Hi I am have installed Windows 7 on a spare hard disc in my PC and am able to install software ok. However, I am unable to use the Steinberg Cubase 4.0 installation disks to install Cubase 4.0. The disks install fine in Vista, but when I attempt to install in Windows 7, I get the onscreen message 'this version of Cubase is for Windows XP or Higher'. It won't install in Windows 7. As an experiment I tried to install an earlier version of Cubase SX 3 which was written for XP, and that installs first time.

However, that version is about 5 years old and I need to install the latest Cubase 4.0 version. I have tried to change the compatibility settings, but none of the alternatives work. Any thoughts or suggestions about this. So far I've had no luck with SE3 (in Vista I had to resort to 'compatibilty' which worked'), or (and for me this is a biggy) the Roland VG99 usb driver, which installs via compatability but offers no ASIO driver, buffer size etc, just as a plain audio device. Finally got SE3 to install after copying the CD to a folder and going back to the original dongle drivers. W7 moaned about 'This program may not have installed properly etc' but it seems OK.

There is still no way I can get the VG99 USB driver working properly though. I have to write a line here. I'm a Cubase 5 owner! (Same to the Cubase 4 Version) This is NOT working rock solid!

Trust me, nevertheless the Vista 64bit. Let's get serious: (1) Install Windows 7 RC1 (64bit), Or Vista 64, 32 bit. (2) Install Cubase 5 (32 or 64 bit) (3) Install UAD-2 Plugins (4) Load up a project with a large ammount of UAD plugins, lets say 95% load of the UAD2 Quad card. Now you are encountering hefty stuttering and audio dropouts in 6ms of ASIO latency, or on even higher latencies! And this is not happening in Windows XP! And this is with the same project! I want this setup to work, or I have to, when the support of XP (32bit) ends.

I think this has something to do with CPU scaling / utilization in Vista and Windows 7. It's useless as a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) right now, sadly. I was hoping for this W7 RC1 to work, but it's not good for realtime audio.

Why is Windows XP working so well? Rock solid with SP0, SP1, SP2 and SP3 and all good old drivers working. Why should we upgrade?

To me it seems that Microsoft doesn't care for us musicians, and we are a lot of users! (Should I order a MAC next time? Or stick with the best OS ever made?) For not receving any replys of: 'what is your system' bla bla bla. Here it comes: Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe CPU: i7 2.66 Mhz (with Hyperthreading ON, no problem in Windows XP 32 bit) Memory: 1366 Mhz 6 GB Corsair HDD: Intel RAID-1, ICH10 AUDIO Card: RME HDSP9632 DSP PCI DSP: UAD-1 PCI-E, and UAD-2 PCI-E Videocard: NVIDIA 7600 GS. Plugins (VSTi:s) used on both the XP and the W7 (Vista) install / tests are: 14 of Nexus2 (from ) 1 of Toxic Biohazard (from ) 2 of Gladiator (from ) For me as a technican it's hard to understand how this is possible, with my new Computer (i7 from intel) it should be more resources left with a new OS version. How can this good old Windows XP be more efficiant than Vista and W7?
